On one day I was lucky the registrar, this is how you call fully qualified doctors receiving advanced training in a specialist field of medicine, I was following was Dr. Alex Scrivens. She was great and offered me to join her and the very kind transport nurse to transport a little one from Oxford to London. My first transport ever combined with a trip to London- oh yes!
Which babies can be transported? They should be in a relatively stable state, unless you’ve got urgent medical conditions another hospital is more capable to deal with. In my case the parents of the baby moved to London and of course preferred to have their baby close to their home. In the morning ward round the doctors decided the baby is stable enough to be transported to London.
Ok, pack the baby’s staff and good to go? Well, there were a few things to deal with before. We waited for the transport team and the neonatal transport incubator, a lot of paperwork needed to be done, signatures signatures signatures, all cables and tubes had to be repositioned. In the end we had to wait until the baby is settled, not too restless and okay to go. It took us about 1:15hrs until we reached Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. And wow, this hospital looked good though, having an aquarium in the entrance hall ;-) After everything went well, we spoiled ourselves with unbelievably delicious bagels and went back to Oxford. Thanks to the whole transport team for involving me!
